Job Description

SEMH Teaching Assistant

Temporary

Start date: September 2026

Are you a patient, resilient support professional who wants to help young people with social, emotional and mental health needs engage with learning?

About the Role

You'll join an education provider as an SEMH Teaching Assistant, working alongside teaching staff to support learners whose social, emotional and mental health needs affect their access to the curriculum.

You'll build trusting relationships, help learners regulate and stay engaged, and give them the practical support they need to make progress in lessons.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing in-class and small-group support for learners with social, emotional and mental health needs.
  • Using agreed strategies to support behaviour, engagement and emotional regulation.
  • Adapting tasks and resources so learners can access the curriculum.
  • Monitoring progress and feeding back to teaching and pastoral staff.
  • Working with colleagues and wider support services to meet each learner's needs.

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • Experience supporting learners with SEMH or wider additional needs
  • A calm, consistent approach and the resilience to manage challenging behaviour
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust quickly

Desirable (but not essential):

  • A Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent
  • Experience of working with young people in an education setting

If you're ready to make a genuine difference to learners who need the right support at the right time, we'd love to hear from you.
