Interim Head of ESOL
Temporary | Contract
Location: the West Midlands
Start date: 12 October 2026
Are you an experienced ESOL curriculum leader looking for an interim management opportunity within further education?
About the Role
As Interim Head of ESOL, you'll take responsibility for the day-to-day leadership and performance of the ESOL provision at a further education provider, making sure learners receive high-quality teaching from the moment you step in.
You'll lead the teaching team, oversee curriculum delivery and quality, and keep a close eye on learner progress, achievement and retention.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and managing the ESOL teaching team.
- Overseeing curriculum delivery, planning and quality.
- Monitoring learner attendance, progress, achievement and retention.
- Supporting and managing staff performance and development.
- Ensuring high standards of teaching, learning and assessment.
- Working closely with senior leaders and other curriculum areas.
- Managing day-to-day operational issues within the provision.
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Strong knowledge of ESOL within further education
- Previous curriculum or departmental leadership experience
- A relevant teaching qualification such as PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or DET
- Confidence to take ownership of a curriculum area and manage a team
Desirable (but not essential):
- Experience of interim or cover leadership roles
- Experience of curriculum quality improvement and KPI monitoring
This role would suit an experienced Head of Department, Curriculum Manager, Programme Manager or Head of Faculty, or a senior ESOL lecturer ready to step up.
