Job Description
Functional Skills Maths Tutor
Permanent
HMP The Mount
Salary: From £30,000 per annum
Are you a passionate maths tutor looking for a role where your teaching genuinely makes a difference?
About the Role
We are seeking an inspiring Functional Skills Maths Tutor to join a Justice Services education team, delivering meaningful learning within a prison education setting. This is a unique opportunity to support learners on their rehabilitation journey, helping them build the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment and shape brighter futures.
You'll deliver engaging and inclusive lessons to learners with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. Many of your learners will have had difficult experiences of education, so patience, empathy and a genuine belief in each individual's potential will matter as much as your subject knowledge.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering functional skills maths qualifications to groups of learners.
- Conducting initial assessments and diagnostics to identify learners' starting points and needs.
- Planning and adapting lessons to meet a diverse range of abilities and learning styles.
- Using innovative teaching approaches and digital resources to make maths relevant and accessible.
- Monitoring and recording learner progress, attendance and achievement.
- Working collaboratively with other tutors, prison staff and stakeholders to support learners' wider development.
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Experience teaching or tutoring maths, or a strong working knowledge of functional skills maths
- A relevant teaching qualification, or a willingness to work towards one
- Strong communication skills and the ability to engage learners with varied needs and backgrounds
- Resilience and a genuine commitment to working within a secure, challenging environment
Desirable (but not essential):
- A recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, Cert Ed or DET)
- Experience delivering Functional Skills qualifications
- Previous experience working in a prison, secure or other challenging educational setting
If you have not taught before but have strong subject knowledge and a passion for helping others learn, we would still love to hear from you — full support, including mentoring and ongoing development, is available to help you transition into teaching.
If you're ready to use your maths expertise to help transform lives through education, we'd love to hear from you.
What's on Offer
- Full support and mentoring
- Ongoing development opportunities
- Training towards teaching qualification if needed
