Job Description

Carpentry Assessor Lecturer

Temporary | Contract

Location: the South West

Start date: 9 November 2026

Are you an experienced carpenter looking to step off the tools and pass your trade knowledge on to the next generation?

About the Role

You'll join a further education provider in a combined role, delivering carpentry programmes to learners and assessing apprentices against their qualification standards. It's a chance to bring your site and bench experience into the workshop and classroom, while supporting apprentices through to achievement in the workplace.

You don't need previous teaching experience to apply. If you have a strong background in carpentry, support will be available to help you develop as a teacher, including mentoring and ongoing development.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering practical and theory sessions across carpentry qualifications.
  • Conducting workplace assessments for carpentry apprentices in line with apprenticeship standards.
  • Assessing learner progress and providing clear, constructive feedback to support achievement.
  • Maintaining accurate, up-to-date records of learner achievement using e-portfolio systems.
  • Liaising with employers to plan and coordinate assessment visits.
  • Maintaining a safe, well-organised workshop environment.

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • A vocational qualification in carpentry at Level 3 or above
  • Up-to-date industry knowledge and hands-on trade experience
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to give constructive feedback

Desirable (but not essential):

  • A recognised assessor qualification (TAQA, CAVA or A1), or a willingness to work towards one
  • A recognised teaching qualification, or a willingness to work towards one
  • A full UK driving licence and access to your own transport for employer site visits

If you're ready to bring your trade experience into teaching and assessing, we'd love to hear from you.

What's on Offer

  • Support and mentoring for teaching development
  • Ongoing professional development
