How do DBS checks work?
What is a DBS check?
A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a UK background check for people working with children or vulnerable adults. In education, this is usually an Enhanced DBS with barred list checks, confirming you're legally allowed to work in these settings.
What level do I need?
For most teaching and support roles, you'll need an Enhanced DBS check, which includes:
- Spent and unspent convictions
- Cautions, reprimands and warnings
- Relevant police information
- Confirmation of whether you're on the children's barred list
How long does it take?
Typical processing time is 2–3 weeks. Urgent applications can sometimes be fast-tracked. If you already have a DBS on the Update Service, we can usually verify it instantly.
What if I don't have one?
We'll support you through the application. You'll need:
- Valid ID (e.g. passport, driving licence)
- Proof of address (e.g. utility bill, bank statement)
- 5 years of address history
DBS Update Service
For £13 per year, the DBS Update Service keeps your certificate portable. Future employers can check your DBS status online, often avoiding the need for a new application.
