What is an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)?
An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document for young people up to the age of 25 who have more complex or long-term special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
It outlines the support needed to help them progress in education and prepare for adulthood.
Why does it matter in FE?
In Further Education (FE), EHCPs help ensure that young people with additional needs can access their learning, develop independence and work towards their long-term goals, whether that’s employment, further study, supported living or a combination.
Key Parts of an EHCP You Should Know:
Section A | The learner’s views and aspirations
What’s important to them, how they prefer to learn, and their future goals.
Section B | Special educational needs
Details of specific learning difficulties, communication needs, or other barriers that affect access to education.
Section F | Provision to meet needs
The tailored support the learner is legally entitled to – this might include in-class support, assistive technology, specialist teaching, or therapies.
Section E | Outcomes
These focus on long-term goals like gaining qualifications, developing employment skills, managing relationships, or living independently.
Other relevant sections include:
- Sections C & D | Health and Social Care Needs
- Sections G & H | Health and Social Care Provision
- Section I | Placement Details
- Sections J & K | Annual Review Planning
Your Role as an LSA in Further Education
- Support the learner to access their course - This could involve breaking down tasks, supporting communication, or helping with organisation.
- Promote Independence - In FE, the focus is on building skills and confidence. Your support should foster autonomy wherever possible.
- Be aware of the EHCP goals - You don’t need to memorise the whole plan, but having a clear understanding of the learner’s needs and outcomes will help guide your support.
- Work collaboratively - You’ll work closely with tutors, SENCo/ALS teams and other support staff – consistent communication is vital.
- Provide feedback - Your observations help inform reviews and shape future support strategies. Don’t underestimate the value of your input!
Top Tips for LSAs in Further Education:
- Treat each learner as an individual – no two EHCPs are the same.
- Always respect confidentiality and dignity.
- Balance support with challenge – encourage stretch and growth.
- Keep records of progress and share relevant updates with your team.
- Don’t hesitate to ask questions – you’re not expected to know everything!
