Starting Something New? Read This First
For many professionals across education and the public sector, September represents a fresh start. A new role. A new team. A new challenge. Or perhaps simply a new mindset going into the next academic or financial year. Whatever your situation, one thing is true: how you start often shapes how you settle.
The First 90 Days Matter More Than You Think
Starting a new role can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. The most successful transitions tend to happen when people focus on three things:
- Building relationships — people matter as much as processes.
- Asking questions — nobody expects you to know everything on day one.
- Understanding expectations — get clear on what success looks like early.
Don't put pressure on yourself to know everything straight away. The first few weeks in any role aren't about having all the answers. They're about learning, listening and building relationships. Remember, your first few months are about progress, not perfection.
Your First 90 Days Checklist
Weeks 1–2: Settle In — learn key names, roles and reporting lines; locate key policies and systems; book introductory chats with close colleagues; clarify who to go to for what; ask your manager what success looks like in month one.
Weeks 3–6: Build Momentum — identify 2–3 early wins you can deliver; ask questions about anything unclear, early; start building relationships beyond your immediate team; note any training or support you need; check in with your manager on progress.
Days 60–90: Find Your Rhythm — review progress against expectations set at the start; seek honest feedback; identify where you're adding the most value; set goals for the next 90 days; reflect on what's working and what to adjust.
Throughout: Look After Yourself — note questions as they come up rather than guessing; give yourself credit for small wins; protect time to rest outside of work; remember that settling in takes time for everyone; keep saying yes to what moves you forward.
