Job Description

Personal Development Tutor

Temporary | Contract

Location: the West Midlands

Start date: September 2026

Are you passionate about supporting young people to get the most out of their education, even if you've never taught before?

About the Role

A further education provider in the West Midlands is looking for a Personal Development Tutor to work alongside learners as they settle into their programmes, build confidence and plan their next steps. This is a pastoral role rather than a subject-teaching one, so no formal teaching qualification is required — experience of supporting young people or a background in care is just as valuable.

You'll be the familiar face learners come to when things are going well and when they aren't, keeping them engaged, on track and clear about where their course is taking them.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Holding one-to-one meetings with learners to review progress and agree targets.
  • Providing day-to-day pastoral support and signposting to specialist services where needed.
  • Monitoring attendance, timekeeping and behaviour, and acting early where concerns arise.
  • Supporting learners with their next steps, including UCAS applications, apprenticeships, further study and employment.

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • Level 2 qualification or higher in English and maths
  • Experience of working with young adults
  • An Enhanced DBS check, or willingness to obtain one

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Knowledge of additional learning needs
  • Up-to-date safeguarding training, or a willingness to complete it
  • Previous experience in a college or training environment

If you'd like to spend your week making a genuine difference to young people's progress, we'd love to hear from you.
