Job Description

Job Title: Music Tutor

Location: Staffordshire- HMYOI

Salary: From £30,000 per annum (Pro Rata)

Contract: Permanent, Part-Time (22.5 hours / 3 days per week)

The Opportunity

Are you a talented musician or creative arts educator who believes in the transformative power of music? Do you want to use performance, songwriting, and creative expression to build confidence, resilience, and positive futures for young people in custody?

We are recruiting for a passionate Music Tutor to join the dedicated Education, Skills & Work team at HMYOI on a part-time basis (3 days per week). In this deeply rewarding role, you will deliver engaging, inclusive music learning programmes that inspire young learners, help them channel their emotional expression, and equip them with essential life and academic skills aligned with their resettlement goals.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Engaging Delivery: Plan and deliver progressive, high-quality music sessions that "teach to the top," stretching and challenging learners across performance, composition, technical skills, and teamwork.
  • Embedded Core Skills: Naturally embed reading (lyric analysis, script work), Maths & English (rhythm, timing, counting, sequencing), and restorative practice principles directly into creative projects.
  • Inclusive Support: Adapt learning to support young people with diverse needs, including neurodiversity, trauma backgrounds, and low prior attainment or literacy levels.
  • Accreditation & Showcases: Prepare learners for accredited qualifications (such as Arts Award) and non-accredited outcomes, facilitating safe performance opportunities, recordings, or collaborative showcases.
  • Quality & Compliance: Maintain accurate registers and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), adhere strictly to tool control and Local Security Strategy guidelines, and contribute to Ofsted-aligned quality assurance processes.

What We Are Looking For

  • Trade Expertise: A recognised Level 2 qualification in Performing Arts/Music or equivalent, hands-on industry experience.
  • Teaching Experience: A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, or equivalent) is desirable, though candidates with the relevant skills and a willingness to work towards a teaching qualification are fully welcomed.
  • Classroom Management: Excellent interpersonal and de-escalation skills, with the ability to handle challenging group situations calmly and maintain a safe, respectful environment.
  • Sector Awareness: A clear understanding of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF), safeguarding principles, and experience implementing reasonable adjustments for learners with additional needs.
  • Key Skills: Strong organisational ability, cultural sensitivity, and a genuine commitment to encouraging reading for pleasure and promoting pro-social behaviour.
