Job Description

Functional Skills Maths Tutor - HMP

Permanent

Location: the East Midlands

Salary: From £30,000 per annum

Are you an engaging educator with strong numeracy skills looking for a teaching role where your work genuinely changes lives?

About the Role

We are recruiting a Functional Skills Maths Tutor to join a training provider in the justice sector, delivering Functional Skills Maths from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2 within a prison education setting.

You'll teach small, focused groups of adult learners with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. Many will have had difficult experiences of education, so patience, empathy and a belief in each individual's potential will matter as much as your subject knowledge. Your job is to make maths accessible, relevant and directly useful for employment and daily life.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering interactive Functional Skills Maths sessions from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
  • Conducting initial assessments and diagnostics to establish learners' starting points, then setting up and maintaining Individual Learning Plans.
  • Designing inclusive, differentiated lessons that cater to diverse abilities and additional needs.
  • Preparing learners for formal assessments and qualifications, celebrating their progress along the way.
  • Promoting numeracy and literacy across the setting, and working alongside colleagues and support practitioners to support learner progression.

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • Strong numeracy skills and a genuine passion for teaching maths
  • Proven experience delivering Functional Skills Maths
  • Strong classroom management and lesson planning skills
  • Resilience and professionalism to teach within a secure environment

Desirable (but not essential):

  • A Level 3 qualification in Mathematics
  • A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent)
  • Experience within prison education, adult learning or Further Education

No Level 5 teaching qualification? Candidates with relevant delivery experience and a willingness to work towards one are encouraged to apply.

If you're ready to use your maths skills to make a genuine difference to adult learners' lives, we'd love to hear from you.
